-
Insulin Safety Part 2 : SEIPS
October 19, 2022
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Aim of series: to promote a systematic approach which explores how preventable harm can be reduced by well understood and designed systems and practices, focusing on the high risk medicine insulin; Creating a fresh perspective and learning opportunity that can be applied and adopted across any area of community pharmacy
Part 2: SEIPS – The Swiss Army Knife of Human Factors
SEIPS (Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety) is arguably the best known and most published systems-based Human Factors framework in health care worldwide. We will apply SEIPS to an insulin dispensing incident to understand the interacting system factors and how this can be used to guide areas for improvement.
Learning Outcomes
Be able to:
- Understand the principles of the SEIPS framework. Specifically: what is meant by process and what is meant by interactions.
- Describe the components of the SEIPS framework and demonstrate understanding of how interactions influence care processes and contribute to system outcomes.
- Apply the SEIPS framework to an insulin dispensing incident.
- Based on the outputs of the SEIPS modelling, identify areas for improvement of the insulin dispensing work system.
- Identify additional development needs to undertake a SEIPS analysis.
