Professor Paul A. McCarron

Professor Paul A. McCarron holds a Chair in Pharmaceutics and is currently the Head of School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Ulster University.  He has worked previously in the pharmaceutical industry for a number of years, before moving to an academic career in Queen’s University.  He was appointed in 2008 to lead the formation and accreditation of a new School of Pharmacy at Ulster University, which is now adjudged to be a leading provider of the MPharm in the UK (Guardian league tables of university subjects – Pharmacy and Pharmacology). A registered pharmacist and member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland, with experience of community pharmacy, he has a particular interest in the development of advanced drug delivery systems with a expertise in translating novel delivery strategies into the clinical and commercial settings.  Following substantial funding from the Research and Development Office in Northern Ireland, Prof. McCarron has developed and trialled an innovative putty-type material for delivering anaesthesia to acute lacerations in the Emergency Department setting.  He is currently a founder and director of two spin-out pharmaceutical companies and is leading the regulatory approval and commercial development of a topical dosage form for pain relief in paediatric populations.
